Registration is now open for the first library unconference in upstate NY, being held in Syracuse on March 4-5.

So what’s an unconference? Sounds odd at first, but it’s a conference where the participants decide what topics will be discussed and everyone shares and learns from each other. Topics to be discussed are finalized at the beginning of the day and people volunteer to lead discussions. Everyone gets to pick and choose what sessions they want to participate in.

I went to one in NYC last summer and it was a terrific experience. And most amazing of all to me, the whole process actually works! I met tons of great people, attended a wide variety of sessions and learned mucho, mucho. I have to admit, I was hesitant to go. I wasn’t sure I’d have any useful information to share and was afraid I’d be ‘called on’ and look stupid - memories of elementary school do die hard! But of course, the atmosphere was very congenial and comfortable. Everyone had a chance to contribute if they wished to or could just soak up the information washing around them.

So don your dancing shoes and register for the Syracuse Unconference.

Registration is $40 to cover food for the day. The event is being supported in part by are LSTA funding (Federal Library Services and Technology Act funds, awarded to the New York State Library by the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services). The event is being sponsored by the Central New York Library Resources Council, the South Central Regional Library Council, and the Syracuse University School of Information Studies, with the collaboration of Jill Hurst-Wahl.
